Frequently Asked Questions
- What's sensor and how many do I need? [+]A single reading on a single device. For servers, storage, networking equipment and many other devices, multiple sensors on a single device is quite normal. On a switch, you might have a traffic bandwidth sensor per port. On a firewall, we like to monitor sessions, uptime, memory used, memory available, CPU time, temperature, etc.
The monitoring is great and highly proactive, you want to increase the number of sensors for greater visibility, not decrease them. - What's an SNMP OID? [+]Think of it like a parameter variable. On a device, there are typically numerous OIDs. Each is a unique value to grab (or set) a unique setting on a device. Use an SNMP walker tool makes it easy to find the exact OID of whatever value you're looking for.
- How expensive is this? [+]Far less than you think and much simpler than you're probably used too. We're raving fans of Paessler PRTG and are well versed in what you should monitor in a network for proactive management, alerting and forensics.
