  • The Story
In the old days others made fat and slow APs without any central management. Then we got a wave of thin APs with intelligent controllers, but it didn't scale well or handle higher throughput. Now with Aerohive Networks we have central management tools for RF, policies and administration, but all the APs have the intelligence and horsepower to enforce policies at the edge. Controllers aren't used to move traffic. This truly is the best of all worlds.
  • Access Points
Aerohive’s 802.11n enterprise wireless LAN access points, HiveAPs, are an innovative class of wireless infrastructure equipment with cooperative control technology that provides the benefits of a controller-based wireless LAN solution, without requiring a controller or an overlay network.
  • Cloud Services
Aerohive’s cloud-enabled service, HiveManager Online, is a cloud-based enterprise management solution that provides all the features and functionality of a behind-the-firewall network management system (NMS) without the installation, operation, and maintenance associated with a dedicated management server, and at dramatically lower cost.
  • Applications
Aerohive’s powerful applications add features, functionality, and value to the complete Aerohive Wi-Fi solution.
TeacherView - Simple-to-use web interface that provides classroom status to a teacher at login, without requiring the teacher to pre-configure any parameters.
StudentManager - A powerful monitoring and reporting system for school districts that use Aerohive HiveAPs for wireless access.
GuestManager - Enables any authorized employee (e.g. lobby ambassador) to create an account via an intuitive Web interface, ensuring that guests can get the access they need while the network remains secure.
  • Software & Management
Aerohive’s HiveOS is the operating system that powers the Aerohive access points, while HiveManager is the wireless network management system for configuration and monitoring. Together, with Aerohive access points, these comprise a complete controller-less Wi-Fi solution.

AWARD-WINNING COMPANY, AWARD-WINNING PRODUCTS

Aerohive’s Controller-less WLAN Architecture and Cloud-based Wireless management provides an innovative alternative to costly and complex controller-based solutions. Our controller-less approach provides all the management, mobility and security of today’s controller-based solution, without the issues of cost, capacity, performance and availability inherent in a controller.

Aerohive's cloud-based wireless management solution, HiveManager Online, delivered as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution allows Customers to start small, and cost effectively expand without limitation.

Aerohive's controller-less and cloud-based management approaches provide large and small/medium enterprises with a highly innovative, reliable and easy to deploy next-gen solution.

Controllerless Wireless Approach and Advantages

Controller based WLANs were designed for an era when there was insufficient processing power in APs to distribute the intelligence as happens in other networking infrastructure. Aerohive’s Controllerless (controllerless wifi) approach distributes all control functions and data forwarding to smart APs while maintaining a centralized management system for monitoring and configuration – similar to how routers in the Internet function. Capabilities include:
  • Intelligent coordinated access points supporting control functions such as dynamic RF management, layer 2/layer 3 roaming, and client load balancing.
  • Integrated mesh technology provides the highest degree of resiliency and connectivity: a 'self healing network'.
  • Powerful and flexible identity-based firewall, access control and quality-of-service (QoS) policies enforced at the edge.
  • Distributed data forwarding for scalable latency optimized performance for 802.11n throughput and beyond.

Aerohive Architectural Advantages

  • No U-turns, Bottlenecks or Single Points of Failure
  • Flexible Expansion - just add APs
  • Superior Branch Performance & Survivability
  • Real Mesh Support
  • Increased Reliability & Reduced Cost (No expensive controllers)
  • Advanced Value-Added Functionality
Many enterprise WLANs today are implemented with a centralized controller-based architecture that breaks from this proven network architecture centralizing the control plane and data plane in the WLAN controller, which compromises scalability and resilience.

Aerohive’s cooperative control architecture is the first architecture to bring these proven network benefits to WLANs. The following chart shows the architectural parallels between cooperative control and the proven architecture used in switched and routed networks.

Self Healing by Dynamically Routing Around Failures

The resiliency built in to HiveAPs using the cooperative control protocols allows the network to continue operation even in the event of multiple inline failures. Because there is no central control, there is no worry of a single device failure that is capable of bringing down an entire wireless network. The diagram below shows HiveAPs and the traffic from wireless clients when all HiveAPs are up and operational, and then when network failures occur and HiveAPs are taken offline.
